The most popular mode of Pranayama is the 'Surya Namaskar' which can be learnt with little difficulty in a few days. Regular practice of 'Surya Namaskar' will provide tremendous physical and mental benefits to its practice. Manthra Pranayama is the prescribed breathing technique of Gurus in all Gurukuls of India. Gurus make it compulsory for all students to practice this Pranayama daily. They want the student not only to learn the technique, but also practice it. The method involves deep slow breaths and is practiced in seven stages with each stage lasting for 10-15 seconds. It is one of the four 'Saraswathi Yogas'. The other three are "Anulom Vilom" (no body parts), "Kapalbhati" (breath keeping) and "Hatha Yoga". This Pranayama is also called 'Bhramari' or 'bee Pranayama'. It is believed that this Pranayama was developed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, a famous yogi of Melpathur with the association of Bhramarambika, the Goddess. The Goddess appeared in his dream and asked him to develop a breath control system so that Manthras, Mantras and the Kavas which were not effective until then could be delivered effectively through breath control. The Guru says that animals have a limited shelf life, but humans live for a long time. So their diet must be planned to maintain health through out the life. In the same way, the lifestyle has to be planned in such a way that unnecessary stress is not brought upon the physical and mental system. The students should not only practice Pranayama regularly but also practice it as per the Guru's intention and intention of God and lead a healthy and disease free life.
